How to open .eml email files on iPhone and iPad

Saved .eml files are common when you export mail, receive forensic bundles, or archive messages outside your inbox app. On iPhone and iPad you can open them locally with readEML — no account and no upload to a website.

From the Files app

  1. Save or download the .eml file to Files (iCloud Drive, On My iPhone, or a provider folder).
  2. Open readEML, go to the Library tab, and tap Import.
  3. Pick one or more .eml files. readEML shows the message body, headers, and attachments in a clean viewer.

From Mail or another app

When you receive an .eml attachment:

  1. Tap the attachment in Mail or Files.
  2. Choose Share or Open in readEML if it appears in the share sheet.
  3. readEML opens the file on your device.

Mailbox archives (.mbox)

For whole mailboxes, use Transfers inside readEML to import .mbox files the same way — still processed on your device.

Safety scan (on-device)

Each message you open can show a simple Safe, Suspicious, or Dangerous verdict with short reasons (sender checks, SPF/DKIM/DMARC when present, links, attachments, and wording). That scan is a helper for files you choose to open — not antivirus and not a guarantee. Basic viewing and verdicts are free; readEML Pro adds detailed explanations and exports when you need them.
